5 Ideas for a Christian Valentine Party

Holiday parties make the perfect venue for kids to socialize with Christian teachers and kids. Chances are the local school and some families will already host many of these love-related parties. If you plan to hold a Valentine’s Day party, make your event stand out with these 5 ideas for a Christian Valentine party. Use this fun event to demonstrate to kids the depth of God’s love. Besides “agape” love, show children the importance of Christian friendship and parental love.

Loving Theme
“Hey kids, we’re having a Valentine’s Day party!” I can tell you exactly what images these words invoke for a child, candy hearts, stealing kisses and having a playful good time. With this kind of introduction, kids will know what to expect—nothing unusual. Select a specific theme for your Valentine’s Day party. Camouflage it in something meaningful that will attract visitors and intrigue your current membership. If you plan to focus on God’s love at your party, then use themes like, “Big God, Big Heart” or “God’s Big Love.”
Involve the Congregation
People always ask me what I can do to help. They cannot always volunteer but there are ways they may serve. Buy enough Valentine cards for each child in your class. Give the cards to members of your congregation. Ask them to write a personal “love note” to the child. Suggest that they remark on how much God loves the child or some nice thing the adult noticed. This is a way to involve seniors in your ministry and one of my favorite ideas.
Christian Conversation Hearts
Buy a box of Christian conversation hearts and pass them out to children. Allow the children to read the hearts, one at a time, and remark on the messages. Use the queues from the hearts to introduce Bible passages about love and God. Even regular conversation candy hearts will do in a pinch. You might sift through them first to pick out inappropriate hearts like, “Kiss me.”
Tree of Love
The Christmas tree lives! Pull out the artificial Christmas tree and decorate it with a strand of red lights. Over the month of February, allow kids to add heart shaped ornaments to the tree. The ornaments can be paper prayers for loved ones and friends. Ask parents to send a photo or take ones yourself, (with parent’s permission) and add them to the tree.
Christian Party Games
Try some Christian games like “Grab the Hearts.” For “Grab the Hearts” blow up 10 to 20 heart-shaped balloons and divide them equally into two large plastic tubs. Set the tubs across a finish line. At the start line, your class will assemble in two lines. When the game starts, each child, one at a time, has to run to the finish line and grab a heart. Then they must return the heart to the start line and place it in an empty bucket there. The team to get the hearts back to the start line first wins. You could make it difficult and tell the class they cannot use their hands. Other tricky variations have the kids hop back or crabwalk, with the balloon back across the start line. Tell kids if they pop the balloon, they must start over.

Valentine's Day is a day to show you care for your family and friends. Our kiddos have parties at school and handout cards to each other. They have candy especially for this day, special cookies and cupcakes. There are so many things just for this day. I encourage you while your kids fill out their cards for their classmates, that you tell them about the greatest love of all. The love of Jesus. Jesus gave us the greatest Valentine gift. Jesus gave His life for us. This is a great time to talk to your kiddos and share with them the wonderful love of our Savior.

Join the Army

George Washington, while commander of the army during the Revolutionary War, was approached by a young man. “General Washington, I believe in you and your cause. I fully support you.” The general thanked him for his support and asked him, “Under which officer do you serve?” “Oh,” said the young man, “I’m not in the army. I’m a civilian.” The general replied, “If you believe in me …if you believe in this cause, and if you support me—then join the army. Put on a uniform and get into the fight.”

It’s true that children’s ministry is challenging, but it’s even more than that. It is spiritual warfare. The stakes are high: the discipleship of children. Satan himself will do all he can to thwart this cause. Be encouraged that you are not a civilian. You’re in the fight. So put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. (Eph. 6:11) You will be equipped with all you need to do, all that God has called you to do.

Victory In Everything We Do....

We all want victory...victory in everything we do. Most of the time when we think of the word victory we think of winning a football or baseball game. Or victory in accomplishing a difficult task. But have you ever thought about victory in life...victory in finances...victory from sin...victory in the life that Jesus has for us. We should all be praying for that.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him."

2 CORINTHIANS 2:14

Give God thanks by confessing that God will always cause your child to walk and live in victory! Pray that your child will have victory in every area of their life. Victory in the friends they choose. Victory in their finances. Victory from the enemy. Victory! Victory! Victory!

Let's confess according to Luke 2:52 that our children are growing in wisdom and favor with God and man. Pray that your child is developing in social skills. Pray that your child is growing in daily judgment. Pray that your child is clothed with favor from upon high.

We must continue our prayers for our children. Every day is a battle and we need to call upon the mighty one, Jesus. He hears our prayers and He will answer our calls.

I hope this series on Pray has brought you closer to the Lord and has strengthen your walk with Him. My hope is that is has also increased your prayer life and time.

Prayer Is Poweful...So Get To It!

For the week of July 11th we are focusing on Psalm 37:23. Confess that the steps of your child are ordered by the Lord. Each and every day, your child will walk in the footsteps that Jesus wants your child to walk.

Pray this with boldness and believe in what the Word says. Our God is good and faithful. Let your voice be heard for the children.

Continue to pray not only for your children but all children. Pray for the children that the folks will see on the mission trips. Pray for the children in our schools and neighborhood.

I hope this series on Pray has brought you closer to the Lord and has strengthen your walk with Him. My hope is that is has also increased your prayer life and time.

This week, week of July 4th, our focus prayer comes from Matthew 5:6. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled." Confess boldly that your child has a hunger for God and the things of God. Confess your child loves God's Word. Confess your child loves to pray. Confess your child has a heart turned toward the thing of God. Confess these things BOLDLY!

We also ask that you pray for the children in your neighborhood; the children in your child's class at school; children you may see in the grocery store and the children that are brought to your heart. Prayer is a powerful thing! So...let's use it...

Praying For Our Kids - Week Four

The prayer series has been such a blessing! The kids are really getting into the whole idea of praying. That is so awesome to see and such a blessing to be part of this time in their lives. As you know we ask all the parents and families to pray a special prayer each week for all the kids. I can't thank you enough for joining this important endeavor. Our kids are our precious gift from God.

Prayer for the week of June 27th is: Confessing according to Isaiah 44:3 that God's blessings are upon you and your family. God's provision will find you and your children like streams and rivers. God's spirit is covering your child like the sky covers the earth. Blessings from God are upon you and they are upon your children.

"For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground; I will pour My spirit on your descendants and my blessing on your offspring." Isaiah 44:3

As you know or have heard by now, we are doing a prayer series with the children. Along with that, each week we will have a focus prayer for us adults. This focus prayer will be the subject of what we will be praying for and over the kids. I encourage you to join the KidsLife Staff and volunteers and pray daily the focus prayers.

The week of June 20th confess according to Nehemiah 2:8 that the good hand of God is upon your child. God's hand in the Bible represents God's authority. God's authority is over your child. The authority of goodness, kindness, meekness, gentleness, patience, peace and joy. Your child lives under the authority of the kingdom of God.

Sunday March 14th

This Sunday we continued to look at the week before Jesus was crucified. We read from Luke 22:39 - 53. We talked about Jesus going to the Garden on Gethsemane and praying. Jesus asked his disciples to pray while he was praying. But when he returned they were sleeping. Ask you kids what happened next. Next Sunday we will continue with the story when Peter denied Jesus.

Sunday March 7th

We are beginning our series on the events leading up to Easter Sunday. Sunday, March 7th, we talked about the last supper that Jesus had with the disciples. We discussed why we take communion and what the meaning of it actually is. We had unleavened bread with grape juice. The kids had alot of fun. Most of the kids had never tasted unleavened bread. So, it was an experience. Next Sunday, we will talk about when Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane and what events took place from there. Hope to see you all!

We had the Princess Party and it was absolutely amazing! All the little girls got their nails and hair done. We ate pizza, watched Cinderella and stayed up very late. The next day we had a wonderful lunch with prizes and all the girls received a beautiful crown. We discussed how getting your nails and hair done can be alot of fun and make you feel good. But the real beauty comes from inside. All of these little girls are truly God's princesses.

New Event Coming...

On February 26th and 27th we will be having an event for moms and daughters. A Princess...inside and out is an absolute fabulous time of fun. We will have manicures, pedicures, hair styling, facials, etc. And along with all that, a two part lesson on Esther...inner and outer beauty. This event will be at the Temple Campus beginning on Friday the 26th at 630pm. We will conclude all activities on Saturday by noon. Attraction?

This past Sunday our class talked about attraction. What attracts us to certain things. Is it fun...Is is interesting...Does it promise us something we like...
My question to them is what attracts them to the love of God. What attracts you to the love of God? Think about this question and sit down with your children and discuss it. We will continue our talk about this on Sunday, Jan. 31st, adding how we can attract people to God's love. How we can be an example of that love. Have your kids remember Ephesians 5:2 Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us.

Our Sunday SuperKids will be discussing LOVE over the next six weeks. Our discussions will come from the love God has for us; the love we have for others; and how in showing love to others, we are showing God's love. This past Sunday we focused on Romans 15:7 Accept one another, then just as Christ accepted you in order to bring praise to God. Review that with your children. Ask them what they think this verse means or better yet, what does it mean to them. Encourage them to memorize the verse. Remember, God's love is for everyone....

It seems that children's ministry has truly gotten a label of the "babysitting club". Well, here at CLC, we are not accepting that label for our ministry, God's ministry, children's ministry. Children's ministry is an opportunity to teach, be taught, bless, be blessed, experience the ultimate joy of truly faithful hearts. Every one that signs up to serve in KidsLife will truly get more than they bargain for...in such a good way! What a great day we had in the Children's department. Our sister campus was with us which was nice. The kids did a lesson on Job. We talked about how Job was a very blessed man but Satan come in and took much of Job's possessions. Satan truly thought that Job would give up on God and lose his faith and hope. But he didn't. God blessed Job greatly for being firm and standing strong. We used animal crackers as an illustration. Ask your child what they remember about the lesson and the animal crackers! We focused on the verse from Isaiah 40:31 "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.". I pray that your strength is renewed each day and that the Lord's grace will fall upon each of you.

The Writing on The Wall

On Sunday, the SuperKids had a great time writing on the wall. Yes, you read right. They got to write on the wall. Well, there was paper taped to the wall for them to wright on. But never the less, they wrote on the wall! Our lesson came from Daniel Chapter five. I encourage you to read through that chapter and talked with your kids to see what they remember. It was alot of fun.

Just a little over a week left until Fall Fest 2009!!! (Oct 31 at Temple Campus and Nov 1 at Killeen) And yes, as a matter of fact we DO still need your candy donations and volunteers to work booths! This week's fruit of the spirit was faithfulness, with our lesson coming from Daniel 6:1-23 as we learned about Daniel's faithfulness as he came face to face with a night in a lion's den after standing up for his faith. God was just as faithful to him then as he is to us now and kept him safe all through the night.

This week's verse:
"A faithful man will be richly blessed." - Proverbs 28:20

Coming up this week: gentleness - as taught to us by Joseph and his brothers.

ALSO - Killeen campus, don't forget - we are still raising money for Cove House!
Story of the week: Peyton Griggs learned the difficult Fruits of the Spirit verse (Galatians 5:22-23) and won a prize of $5 for her effort - which she chose to donate to the Cove House project rather than keeping it for herself. Praise the Lord for the love and kindness of our children!

Good afternoon to all of our CLC'ers!

It's been a very exciting two weeks in CLC Killeen - we've had some deployment homecomings and - the reason why there hasn't been an update for two weeks - a new addition to our nursery. My little guy, Keaghan Robert, was born on Oct 10 and I am certainly a proud Mommy! However, now that I've recovered, it's time for an update and there's lots of fun things going on so keep reading!

We are currently gearing up as Fall Fest 2009! This year, it will take place on Sunday November 1 from 5-7 PM at the Killeen Civic Center (October 31 for the Temple Campus). We are still looking for help in the following areas:

1. We need families to "adopt a booth." All of our booths are family-friendly and every member of the family can help, including the little ones! This definitely will not cut into the time that you and your family can spend enjoying the other booths.

2. Candy and prizes!! You can't have a Fall Fest without fun prizes to win! We are accepting all donations at the children's welcome center.

3. Get the word out! Tell everyone you know! Bring friends! Tell your friends to bring their friends!

If you have any questions or think you will be able to help in any of these areas, please let us know!

We are continuing our lessons on Fruits of the Spirit. The last two weeks, we have focused on kindness and goodness. We learned about goodness through the creation story (Genesis 1) as God declared all of his Creation "good." We also learned about kindness with a lesson coming from the story of Boaz and Ruth (from Ruth 2) as Boaz shows kindness to a poor and hungry Ruth by helping to feed her and her relative Naomi.

We also talked about how even kids can show kindness - they don't have to wait until they are "grown up." For this reason, we are doing a project this fall to raise money for Cove House, a food bank and shelter in Copperas Cove that services the Killeen area. We are doing chores for our parents and friends to raise money from now until December 13 with a goal of $300!

How can you help? If you need any help around the house or with odd jobs, hire a Kid!

This Sunday, we will talk about Faithfulness and learn about the story of Daniel and the lion's den.

Tomorrow is the first day of October!! We may still be in hot and humid Central Texas but it's still starting to feel like Fall!!!

Speaking of October, for our amazing volunteers from the Temple Campus, please check out the schedule for October. It has been updated with a few minor changes. If there are any scheduling conflicts, let us know ASAP.

It's "store night" at Superkids Club! The anticipation is high - after weeks of saving their hard earned Superbucks, tonight, your kids can cash them in for fun toys and prizes. You definitely do not want to miss this! Superkids Ministries meets at the Temple campus Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Even if your kids have never attended before, don't be afraid to make this your first week - they get a Superbuck just for showing up (and another if they bring their Bible).

Just to keep you all updated in what we are learning, last week was an exciting lesson on "patience" from our friend Abraham. (Yep, patience is another Fruit of the Spirit) Our lesson came from Genesis 12:1-6 & Genesis 21:1-7 and we all decided that Abraham and his wife, who had to wait until they were 101 years old for God to give them the baby He had promised, are more patient than we will ever be!

MEMORY VERSE FOR THE WEEK:

"Be patient with everyone." - 1 Thessalonians 5:14

(ask your kids what this week's verse is... I bet they remember this one)

Next week's lesson is on kindness. It comes from Ruth 2 and it is the story of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz and the kindness that Boaz showed to them when they were poor and needed food.

Questions for your kids to think about:

1. How do you feel when someone shows you kindness?

2. Even though you are "just kids" and don't have a lot of money or material goods to give away, do you still think that you can show kindness?

3. In what ways?

Never let your kids think that they can't change the world simply because of their age: Mary was only a teenager when she gave birth to Jesus and David was even younger when he fought Goliath. God can use anyone!

My favorite "theologian" (not sure she would have called herself that though), Mother Teresa once said "We can do no great things, only small things with great love." I love this quote because sometimes we lose sight of what's right in front of us because we are so busy looking at the big picture and all of the lives we can't reach because we don't have the money or we are too busy to take on a huge missions project. It's so easy to forget that God isn't always looking for us to take on the world, but sometimes to simply love and show kindness to those right in front of us (including that irritating neighbor whose dog barks at all hours of the night or the guy who cuts us off in traffic).

Thank you to the Killeen volunteers and parents for a wonderful barbecue on Sunday afternoon. If you weren't able to make it, you missed a fun afternoon of football, good food, and great fellowship. I (Brooke) am so excited about the months ahead and all of the opportunities that we have to grow as a children's ministry community.

2nd piece of news - Killeen crew, we are back at the Civic Center again on Sunday. Thank you to Pam and the children's department in Temple for letting us invade your space for 2 weeks! The October schedule for Killeen is posted on the calendar. If you see any scheduling issues, please let us know now, rather than later, so that we can switch things around. Also, would like to ask that the Killeen volunteers for this Sunday please be at the Civic Center BY 8:30 AM. Grab a cup of coffee and a donut and head back to the Superkids room for a quick volunteer meeting/prayer/devotional to get us recharged before the kids start pouring in. (There MIGHT be some yummy treats involved)

On Sunday we talked about peace with the story of Noah and the Ark from Genesis 7:1-24. If I was building an ark and everyone I knew was laughing at me, I can promise you that there isn't any place I could find peace other than by looking to the Lord!

MEMORY VERSE FOR THE WEEK:
"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." - Colossians 3:15

This Sunday we learn about patience with a story about Abraham and his wife Sarai who wanted nothing more than a baby. Our story will come from Genesis 12:1-6 & Genesis 21:1-7. This is a lesson that a lot of us need to learn - most definitely myself included!

Don't forget, Superkids Club meets tonight at the Temple Campus at 6:30 pm. And next Wednesday, the "store" is open where your kids can cash in their Superbucks that they have earned over the past few weeks by remembering their Bibles, folders, memory verses, bringing a friend, and by correctly answering questions. There will be some great prizes at the store so don't miss it! Look forward to seeing you there!

Coming up: Peace

This Sunday, in our Kids Life Ministries we will once again be worshiping together at the Temple Campus and this week's Fruit of the Spirit will be peace.

We are given a great example of how God gave one man peace in one of the earliest stories in the Bible and a familiar face: Noah. Our story comes from Genesis 7:1-24 and the story of the flood and the peace that God gave Noah despite a raging storm.

Questions for your Kids to Think About:
1. What do you think of when you think of peace?
2. Where do you go when you want peace?
3. Is there a difference between the peace that comes from God and peace that we find on our own?

Today, the Temple and Killeen church families joined together for services, meeting at the Temple campus. But don't worry - we didn't take a break from the Fruits of the Spirit!

Today's fruit of the spirit = joy.

We learned another lesson from our friend David, with a story taken from 2 Samuel 6:12-22 where David dances for joy when he learned that a special box containing the Ten Commandments would be passing through Jerusalem. Even though some looked at him like he was crazy, David was so full of joy that he couldn't help but dance! Sometimes, God just blesses us in such a way that we can't help but let it out!

Expressing Joy

If you remember two Sundays ago, we talked about the difference between being "happy" and having "joy." The difference is that REAL joy comes from the Lord.

So how do you express joy? Do you jump up and down? Do you sing? Do you dance?

On Sunday we are going to talk about how David expressed his joy. Our lesson is going to come from 2 Samuel 6:12-22.

Questions for your kids to think about:
1. What gifts has God given us that we can be thankful for that bring us joy?
2. How do you share your joy in the Lord with others?
3. Do you think others will always understand our joy?

Fruits of the Spirit - Week 1: Love

For the next nine weeks, your children are going to be learning the fruits of the spirit. Today we learned about love!

We talked about some of the ways that we show love.

Our story today was about a very specific show of love from one friend to another. David and Jonathan are a wonderful example of friends who love one another. From 1 Samuel 20:1-42, we learned about how Jonathan saved David's life after his father, King Saul, discovered that David was going to be the one to take over as King someday. King Saul wanted to kill David! But instead of letting his father hurt his friend who he loved, Jonathan slipped away and warned David that he needed to run away. What a selfless thing to do!

Our goal for this week is to show our friends love just like Jonathan did: to be selfless and giving, and to always pray for them.

Next week's fruit of the spirit: joy.

Happiness and Joy

Today, in Sunday School, we learned the difference between "happiness" and "joy."

Some of the things that make us happy:
- video games
- watching our dogs play
- watermelons
- our families
- animals

We learned that being "happy" is like blowing up a balloon using your lungs and throwing it up into the air - sure the balloon will rise but it can't stay afloat. You can hit it up in the air (and we did!) but at some point it will come back down. But REAL joy comes from God and God alone. His love is the "helium" in our balloon that keeps it afloat.

OUR VERSE FOR TODAY:
"But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!"
Galatians 5:22-23

Parents, we will be memorizing this verse over the next few weeks - and yes, there are prizes involved!!
